V Groove Profiles
A V groove is a hard line cut into the board. The whole point of it is that it is sharp, and the whole risk of spraying it is that it stops being sharp.
- V grooved MDF · Primed MDF · Solid timber
- Satin · Gloss · Whites and light colours · Darker colours · Black

The groove is end grain for most of its length. Left unsealed it absorbs differently to the face and dries back with a visible change in sheen down the line.
Build too much material in the groove and the V softens into a U. The work is in keeping the film even across the face while staying light in the cut.
Grooves also show every wobble in the run. They are sighted along, not looked at square on, which is how they get checked before anything leaves.
How it runs
- 01Seal the groovesCut edges sealed so sheen stays even along the line.
- 02Prime and blockBuilt on the face, kept light in the cut.
- 03ColourEven film across the face, no build in the groove.
- 04Cure and sightSighted along each groove before it is wrapped.
Questions we actually get
- Will the grooves lose their sharpness?
- Not if the film build is kept even. Too much material in the cut turns a V into a U, so the technique is to build on the face and stay light in the groove. It is checked by sighting along the run rather than looking at it square on.
